Week 2 Blog Assignment

Part 1:  Authentic Intellectual Work/Authentic Instruction & Assessment.  

Use the following questions/prompts to guide the development of your post.

  1. What is the nature of Authentic Intellectual Work?  How does it differ from traditional approaches to instruction and assessment? 
  2. Discuss the components of Authentic Intellectual Work and provide deep consideration of at least one component by including a discussion of empirical (research-based) evidence found in Chapter 2.
  3. Describe a specific example of authentic intellectual work in a discipline or content area.

The nature of Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) supports teachers in creating learning experiences that reflect real-world challenges. It emphasizes students constructing knowledge through disciplined inquiry, leading to work that has value beyond the classroom. Rather than relying on memorization and routine procedures, AIW prioritizes problem solving and higher-level thinking, allowing students to develop deeper understanding and greater meaning in what they are learning.

AIW differs from traditional approaches to instruction and assessment because it is more engaging and hands-on. Traditional instruction often relies on lectures, direct instruction, worksheets, and paper-based tests that assess students’ ability to recall information rather than demonstrate understanding. In contrast, AIW emphasizes meaningful application of knowledge and encourages students to think critically about what they are learning and why it matters beyond the classroom.

The AIW framework is composed of three components: construction of knowledge, disciplined inquiry, and value beyond school. Construction of knowledge requires students to use higher-level thinking skills such as organizing, interpreting, evaluating, or synthesizing prior knowledge to solve new problems. Disciplined inquiry builds on this by encouraging students to deepen their understanding and communicate their thinking in an elaborated way. The final component, value beyond school, ensures that learning extends beyond earning a grade and connects to real-world relevance. As noted in the text (p. 5), even complex problems, such as calculus tasks, lack authenticity if their only purpose is passing a course.

Chapter 2 discusses the Chicago 46-School Study, which provides empirical evidence for the effectiveness of AIW. Newmann et al. (2007) found that classrooms emphasizing authentic instruction produced higher-quality student work and improved achievement levels. Students who received high-quality assignments scored at least 30 (percentile) points higher than those who received lower-quality tasks. The data presented (p. 21) illustrates the relationship between instructional quality and student performance across multiple grade levels and subject areas.

An example of AIW in mathematics would involve students analyzing real-world data, such as creating a budget for an event. Students must construct knowledge by determining budget constraints, identifying necessary expenses, and organizing costs. They apply mathematical concepts to create a budgeting tool of their choice and then communicate their reasoning through disciplined inquiry. This task is intellectually rigorous, engaging, and meaningful beyond the classroom, as budgeting is a skill students will continue to use in real life.

Part 2:  2024 National Education Technology Plan Update

The 2024 NETP is not explicitly connected to the Authentic Intellectual Work Framework.  What opportunities do you see within the first section “Digital Use Divide” to connect technology integration practices with the components of authenticity?  Describe an example in the plan or develop your own example aligned with Universal Design for Learning highlighted in the technology plan and opportunities for students to engage in authentic intellectual work.

In the NETP section titled “Digital Use Divide,” clear opportunities are presented to connect technology integration with authentic learning. This section emphasizes not just access to technology, but how it is used to promote student engagement and meaningful learning. When technology is used purposefully, it supports learning experiences that connect to Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW), particularly the component of value beyond school, by helping students apply knowledge in relevant and transferable ways.

Technology supports UDL by offering multiple means of engagement, expression, and representation, allowing students to demonstrate understanding in ways that traditional paper-and-pencil tasks may not. For example, in a geometry unit, students could use digital tools such as GeoGebra or Desmos to create and manipulate geometric shapes. Students can then share their discoveries through platforms like Google Slides, Jamboard, or Pear Deck. This approach allows students to construct knowledge, engage in inquiry, and communicate their reasoning clearly. In doing so, this will help foster authentic intellectual work.

Part 3:  Triple E Framework 

What connection do you notice between the AIW framework and Kolb’s Triple Es?  How does the example you developed above support Engagement, Enhancement, or Extension?  

AIW and Kolb’s Triple E framework are connected because both emphasize meaningful, student-centered learning. Both frameworks focus on engagement and inquiry, guiding students to construct knowledge that can be applied beyond the classroom. In my example, all three “Es” of Kolb’s framework are addressed. Students are engaged while exploring and manipulating geometric shapes using online tools, which makes learning interactive and hands-on. Learning is enhanced as technology allows students to visualize and interact with geometric concepts, deepening their understanding in ways that traditional paper-and-pencil methods cannot. Finally, learning is extended because students share their discoveries with peers through platforms such as Jamboard or Google Slides, and they can apply their knowledge of geometric shapes in real-world contexts beyond school.

It not only teaches them how to utilize technology, but it also helps with their future financial readiness! Overall, great blog!

  2. Hello Erica, nice work this week! I appreciated your use of the Chicago study to illustrate the benefits of AIW. I also liked that you linked together the Digital Use Divide and the AIW by citing specific examples of digital tools educators could use. I also agree with Jesse's comment that the budgeting tool example was a great addition and would be very helpful to implement in a classroom.
